Poll reflects feelings against howard govt gillard wins but says she would like other candidates to do well in upcoming elections


The Australian Labor Party today endorsed Tony Abbott's leadership bid as it said it would contest the federal election for the first time since 1993 if the party chose a successor.


"As an incumbent parliamentarian, I feel we need to move forward," Abbott told supporters in Adelaide. "As premier I believe I can do that, and what I am offering is the best way forward for this country.


"And for that reason, the Australian Labor Party would like to stand in the leadership election."


After more than 10 years as the head of one of the most unpopular parliaments in the country, Abbott faced strong criticism for appointing former attorney-general George Brandis, a staunch rightwing firebrand with no federal parliament experience, to succeed him.


Brandis, who has been at the helm since March 2014, is considered a possible successor.

Abbott has promised to cut red tape and make it easier for young people to work and study without the fear of penalty for getting work experience. He wants to increase investment in education and job creation.


The federal leader has made national headlines, making visits to 10 of the 20 state premiers this week, which he says is an effort to strengthen his hand as the race approaches a general election, because he has a clear advantage over Labor.


"There is nothing like the sense of unity in a caucus when you have won premiership and it's been a very well-oiled machine of consensus, and that's what we'll continue to offer," Abbott said. "A lot of our leaders today will be more likely to look back on 2014 and say, 'I've done the national thing'. We're ready for that."


Labor, which has not secured a single seat since 2010, would only hold one place in an Australian senate if it was the largest party in the Senate, according to Labor sources. This would likely force Abbott to enter a government with a coalition of seven smaller parties.


Labor had promised to contest the federal election for the first time since 1993 and could also expect another shock result next year, when its majority government faces a potential two-thirds minority in the Senate.


Abbott has not said when he will announce a coalition with the opposition. Opposition frontbencher Eric Abetz said it would be a "very serious" move for the leader of the rightwing One Nation party to try to unseat a sitting Prime Minister.
